Mattresses Matter

mattressesDo you toss and turn at night or wake frequently with back pain or discomfort? If so, it’s a good idea to see your doctor. The answer could be as simple as changing your mattress.

We spend approximately one third of our lives sleeping. Considering this fact, a decent mattress is an investment into comfort and health. People who lack adequate sleep are at an increased risk for developing high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. A regular lack of sleep can also negatively affect one’s ability to lose weight. Experts agree that getting enough shut-eye is as important to your health and well-being as diet and exercise. A healthier lifestyle could very well begin with choosing a new mattress.

Innerspring mattresses use a steel coil support system and are covered by padding or upholstery material. Pillow-tops have an additional upholstery layer sewn onto the top of the mattress. Specialty foam mattresses use one or more types of foam to add comfort and dissipate heat. Gel mattresses use foam with gel for support. Latex beds are naturally hypoallergic. Talk to your doctor about which mattress is best for you based on your preferred sleep position. It’s important to maintain good posture while sleeping– if your mattress is too soft, it won’t keep your spine aligned; if it’s too firm, it could leave you with back stiffness or a sore neck and shoulders. The key is to find the right mattress for your body.

Side sleepers may benefit from somewhat softer mattresses, while back and stomach sleepers may gain better support from a firmer mattress. If you’re a back sleeper who snores, be sure to tell your doctor, as this position may actually be disruptive to your health if you have sleep apnea. While sleeping on your stomach can reduce snoring, it can be hard on the spine and neck. Adjustable mattresses may be beneficial for some individuals– they allow sleepers to bend and elevate different parts of the bed and customize positions for maximum comfort and support.

Tip: Use a mattress pad to protect and extend the life of your mattress. Most are comfortable, hygienic, and washing machine friendly.
